For Zeelandic Flanders, Belgium is hardly abroad
If you live in Hulst, Terneuzen or Axel, you shop in Sint-Niklaas, go to hospital in Ghent or Antwerp and have colleagues on both sides of the border. The step to living in Belgium is a small one here. Yet the search often stops at the first villages across the border. The villa districts north of Antwerp are half an hour further and offer a different kind of house.

From Zeelandic Flanders you take the E34 and the Liefkenshoek tunnel (toll) or the Kennedy tunnel under the Scheldt, then the Antwerp ring road to the E19. From Walcheren and Zuid-Beveland you take the A58 to Bergen op Zoom and then the A4 and A12 towards Antwerp.
Working in the port or in chemicals
Since 2018 Terneuzen and Vlissingen have formed the cross-border North Sea Port together with Ghent, and the port of Antwerp-Bruges is just around the corner. Many jobs in chemicals and logistics are therefore already cross-border. Brecht is on the right side of Antwerp for anyone working on the right bank, and the ring road gets you to the left bank quickly too.
The villa
Villa Grandeur at Dennenlaan 58 offers 412 m² of living space on 1,529 m² of land: an 83 m² living room, a family kitchen, five bedrooms, an office, a sauna and a heated pool. The asking price is €1,095,000. In Zeeland that budget buys a fine house by the water; here it buys space, woodland and a cosmopolitan city around the corner. See the photos and floor plans.
Keep working in the Netherlands
If you work in Zeeland and live in Belgium, you are a cross-border worker. Your salary is generally still taxed in the Netherlands and you remain insured there for healthcare. The guide Mortgage and tax explains how that works.
