Brecht, Schilde, Brasschaat or Kapellen?

Four green municipalities on Antwerp's northern edge, each with its own character. An honest comparison for those new to the area.

The northern edge in brief

North and north-east of Antwerp lies a belt of wooded, prosperous municipalities. The people of Antwerp call it the green edge. Anyone looking for a villa here usually looks in several municipalities at once. The differences lie in atmosphere, amenities, access and in what your budget buys.

Brecht and Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor

Sint-Job is the district of Brecht closest to Antwerp. It has its own village centre on the canal, surrounded by villa districts in the woods. Its strong point is location: the slip road onto the E19 is a few minutes away, so you reach Breda or Rotterdam faster than from Schilde or Brasschaat, and Noorderkempen station is in the municipality. For buyers who keep working in the Netherlands, that makes the difference. For the same budget you generally buy more land and more house here than in Schilde or Brasschaat.

Schilde and 's-Gravenwezel

The classic choice of the Antwerp entrepreneur. Lots of greenery, castle estates, Golf & Country Club Rinkven and a high price level. The village centre is small; for shops you go to Brasschaat or Antwerp. To the Netherlands you drive via Sint-Job to the E19.

Brasschaat

A municipality with the amenities of a small town: a long shopping street, a large park, schools, top-level sports clubs and a tram link to Antwerp. The villa districts are sought after and prices follow. It is busier than Sint-Job.

Kapellen

Further north, with extensive villa parks and the Kalmthoutse Heide close by. For those who want to take the train to Antwerp or Roosendaal, the station is a plus. To Breda you detour via the A12 or take local roads to the E19.

What suits whom?

  • You keep working in the Netherlands: Brecht, because of the E19 and the station.
  • You want everything within walking distance: Brasschaat.
  • You want maximum peace and prestige: Schilde or 's-Gravenwezel.
  • You want nature and the train: Kapellen.
  • You want the most house for your budget: Brecht.
